Plantation shutters do far more than look beautiful — they can meaningfully reduce heat loss in winter and keep rooms cooler in summer. Here's how.
When most people think about plantation shutters, they think about kerb appeal and interior style. But there is a practical side to shutters that often goes unnoticed — their ability to improve the thermal performance of your home. With energy costs remaining high across the UK, it is worth understanding how the right window covering can make a real difference to your heating bills.
Windows are one of the biggest sources of heat loss in a home. Even double-glazed units allow significant heat to escape through conduction and convection — cold air near the glass creates a downdraft that draws warmth away from the room. The gap between a well-fitted shutter panel and the glass creates a layer of still air that acts as an additional insulating barrier, slowing the rate of heat transfer.
Plantation shutters — particularly our solid panel and full-height styles — sit close to the window frame and create a sealed air pocket when closed. This dead air space is a poor conductor of heat, which means less warmth escapes from the room and less cold penetrates from outside. Studies have shown that well-fitted internal shutters can reduce heat loss through a window by up to 51% compared to an uncovered single-glazed window, and by a meaningful margin even on double glazing.
Energy efficiency works both ways. In summer, shutters are equally effective at keeping rooms cool. By angling the louvres to deflect direct sunlight while still allowing airflow, you can significantly reduce solar gain — the warming effect of sunlight entering through glass. This means less reliance on electric fans or air conditioning, and a more comfortable home throughout the warmer months.
Both our hardwood and our poly (ABS polymer) shutters provide good insulating properties, but there are differences worth noting. Hardwood shutters have natural insulating qualities inherent to the timber. Our poly shutters are hollow-core, which means they also trap air within the panel itself, adding an extra layer of insulation. For rooms with particularly cold or draughty windows, poly shutters can be an excellent choice.
Beyond insulation, shutters help reduce draughts. A well-fitted shutter panel covers the entire window recess and, when closed, significantly reduces the cold air movement that makes a room feel chilly even when the heating is on. This is particularly noticeable in older properties with sash windows or windows that are not perfectly sealed.
