How to Control Natural Light in Every Room

Too much glare in the living room? Bedroom too bright in the morning? Here are our top tips for managing natural light room by room.

Natural light is one of the most valuable things in a home — but too much of it, in the wrong place, at the wrong time, can cause real problems. Glare on screens, faded furniture, early morning wake-ups. Here's how to get the balance right in every room.

Living Room

The living room is where glare is most often an issue — particularly on television screens and monitors. Plantation shutters with wide louvres are ideal here: you can angle the slats to bounce light up towards the ceiling, flooding the room with brightness while eliminating direct glare. Roller blinds with a light-filtering fabric are a more affordable alternative.

Bedroom

For bedrooms, blackout is king. Blackout roller blinds or roman blinds with a blackout lining are the most effective solution. If you want the aesthetic of shutters in the bedroom, pair them with a blackout blind behind — the shutters handle the daytime light, the blind handles early mornings.

Kitchen

Kitchens need practical, easy-to-clean solutions. Roller blinds in a wipe-clean fabric are popular, as are PVC shutters. Avoid heavy fabrics near cooking areas where steam and grease can cause damage.

Home Office

For a home office, the priority is eliminating screen glare without losing too much light. Venetian blinds are excellent here — the horizontal slats can be angled precisely to cut out direct sun while keeping the room bright. Alternatively, a light-filtering roller blind in a neutral colour works well.

Bathroom

Privacy is the main concern in bathrooms, but you still want natural light. Café-style shutters (covering only the lower half of the window) are a beautiful solution — full privacy at eye level, open light from above. PVC shutters are the practical choice given the moisture.
